About This Site

The "Florida’s Tastiest Catch" and Working Waterfronts initiatives focus on the importance of Florida’s commercial fishing industry from its beginnings to the  present.  The goal is to provide a closer look at  Florida fishermen and the struggles they face to supply consumers with quality products.

Florida’s commercial fishing industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years.  Hurricanes have damaged fishing fleets and processing infrastructure, cheap seafood imports have flooded U.S. markets, and soaring fuel prices have drastically increased Florida fishermen’s cost of doing business. But, even when faced with this "perfect storm" of adversity, Florida fishermen persevere. Consumers can help by always asking for Florida-harvested seafood products.

The Working Waterfronts web site is intended to help educate the public about Florida’s hardworking and dedicated fisherman and the working waterfronts and fishing communities they represent.  The project incorporates endorsements by three popular fishing captains from the "Deadliest Catch" television show – Sig Hansen and Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand.  The web site will grow as new features are added, such as photos and documentary videos that show the history of Florida’s commercial fishing industry and how the coastal communities built on this heritage are faring today.
